The band, originally known as the Renegades in its earlier years, was renamed to The Plague in 1965 by John Armentrout and Greg Horner. The members were John (rhythm guitar/lead guitar/vocals) and Greg (lead guitar) , Al Kellogg (lead vocals), Les Anderson (keyboards), Billy Goodman (bass guitar/vocals) , and Mike Shirley (drums) .

The band performed at the typical venues for high school age musicians. In mid-1966 the quality and performance level of the band led to a professional performance contract with Paramount Artists Corporation who handled many top-rated artists, known nationally and locally (such as Link Wray and His Raymen, The British Walkers, The Chartbusters, and The Willett Brothers, just to name a few.)

The new band had a changeover of musicians and was requested to change its name, which was (sort of) done, back to The Renegades. This was done before its support gig at the Washington National Guard Armory Show of Stars in 1967 featuring groups such as The Animals, The Four Seasons, The Yard Birds, and more. The new group was then comprised of John (rhythm guitar/lead guitar/vocals) and Greg (lead guitar), along with Ralph Watters (bass guitar/vocals), Kenneth Carmean (drums), and Dennis Massey (lead vocals). We also had the privilege to welcome Joe Reino (rhythm guitar/lead guitar/vocals) to our band as an associate (he was a bit younger and was limited to play venues that did not have a minimum age). At that time Joe was definately an "Up and Comer" in our little world, and we enjoyed having him around to learn on-the-job! And, of course, Joe went on to bigger and better things!

At this point, and until the military draft entered into the picture, the band played gigs around the DC, Maryland, Virginia, and occassionally the New Jersey shore area. However, in those days, the focus was always on the Georgetown scene (the M Street and Wisconsin Avenue corridors).

Today (2024) it is not known where many former members are, with the exception of Ken Carmean, who we believe was killed in a motrocycle accident over 30 years ago. The following former members are still in contact with each other: John, Greg, Ralph, Les, and Joe.

What has been going on since the mid-1960s?
